Chiefly correspondence, accounts, and legal papers, 1836-1844 (363 items), of John Driver Allmand (1779-1851) and his partners, William N. Ivy, Daniel Sanford, and Sidney A. Sanford, all of Norfolk, Va., concerning efforts to procure white oak from St. Mary Parish, La., for use in fulfilling shipbuilding contracts with the U.S. Navy. Other materials include papers documenting business transactions with the Dismal Swamp Canal Company, and correspondence, 1813-1851, describing the capture of a slave ship by the "Jamestown" and the return of the slaves to Africa. Also included are accounts, 1799-1818 (45 items), of Copeland Parker (d. 1830) of Norfolk, Va., including bills for the education of his daughters; correspondence, 1804-1820, accounts, 1797-1817, and other papers of Harrison Allmand (1757-1822) of Norfolk, largely concerning the ship "Thomas"; correspondence, 1858-1871, of John Allmand about family affairs and his travels and life in Malaya, Japan and China; and genealogical notes.
